Marie Fajtová


Winner of the Grand Prize at the Barbara Hendriks International Singing Competition in Strasbourg.

She studied piano at the Prague Conservatory (1992–1998) with Professor Jan Novotný and then opera singing with Professor Jiří Kotouč (1998–2003).


She also studied with American soprano Nancy Henninger and world-renowned singer Christa Ludwig. She has completed many world and European tours with major orchestras. She sang for King Charles III of Great Britain, King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, the Dalai Lama of Tibet, and also Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17 astronaut, visitor to the Moon).


In 2004, she became a finalist in the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition, where she received the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK award.


In 2008, she won the main prize at the Barbara Hendricks International Singing Competition in Strasbourg.


In the 2005/2006 season she was a member of the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen, where she portrayed Norina (Donizetti: Don Pasquale) and Fiordiligi (Mozart: Così fan tutte).


Since the 2006/2007 season, she has been a soloist at the National Theatre Opera in Prague. Here she has added other major roles to her repertoire, such as Mozart's Donna Elvira and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Susanna and the Countess (The Marriage of Figaro), Pamina (The Magic Flute) and Arminda (La finta giardiniera) or Violetta (Verdi: La traviata), Frasquita (Bizet: Carmen), Armida (Handel: Rinaldo), Adina (Donizetti: The Elixir of Love), Antonia (Offenbach: The Tales of Hoffmann), Penelope (Britten: Gloriana), Eurydice (Gluck: Orpheus and Eurydice), Karolina (Smetana: The Two Widows) and Bellini's Norma. In 2007-2011, she was a guest at the Prague State Opera (Violetta).


For several seasons she was a regular guest at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, as Marguerite (Gounod: Faust), at the Finnish National Opera and at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste.

Abroad, she appeared on the National Theatre's tour in Japan as Susanna, Pamina and the Countess, as Violetta in Regensburg and Mannheim, Germany, and Donna Anna in Magdeburg.


She performed in Finland and France in the title role of Pergolesi's opera La serva padrona. She successfully toured France with the National Theatre Opera's production of Rinaldo in Caen, Rennes, Luxembourg and L'Opéra Royal de Versailles.


A significant part of her artistic activity is baroque music, especially in collaboration with the ensembles Capella Regia Praha, Collegium Marianum, Collegium 1704 and Camerata Nova. In 2006 she created the title role in Handel's Alcina for the Valtice Festival and sang Serpina in La serva padrona at the Český Krumlov International Music Festival. She also performed as Angelica (Vivaldi: Orlando furioso) and Agenore (Bononcini: Astarto) and at the 2004 Prague Spring International Music Festival she performed as Primislao in the baroque pasticccia Praga nascente da Libussa e Primislao.


In 2014, she performed again at the Prague Spring; together with the Wihan Quartet, she performed a composition by the prominent contemporary composer Jan Klusák, La jolie rousse.


She performs in concerts with, among others, the Czech Philharmonic, PKF, PKO, the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK and others. She has collaborated with prominent conductors such as Jiří Bělohlávek, Jiří Kout, Tomáš Netopil, Asher Fish, Michel Schwierczewski, Ondrej Lenárd, Charles Olivieri Munroe, Enrico Dovico, Kari Tikka and Gianluigi Gelmetti. She has given concerts in many European countries (Spain, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, etc.), in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Brunei, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and in the African Ceuta.


In 2009, Arco Diva released the song album Pensive Songs (K. Slavický, A. Dvořák, B. Martinů, R. Strauss). She participated in the internationally awarded recording of Jan Dismas Zelenka's Serenade ZWV 177 Il diamante (Nibiru, 2009).
